Book Review- Separate is never Equal
By Duncan Tonatiuh
Separate is Never Equal addresses the discrimination faced by Mexican-American children in California’s school admissions. The story follows Sylvia and her family as they move to Westminster, California, where Sylvia eagerly anticipates attending a larger school. However, she and her siblings are denied admission, directed instead to a “Mexican school” with inferior facilities, initiating their family's fight to end segregation in education.
The book presents moments of stark injustice, and brought shock and disappointment to my child who for the first time had to confront the reality of such inequality. It also prompts reflection on the privileges and opportunities we may often take for granted.
The illustrations, rendered in a folk-art style, are rich and evocative, enhancing the narrative’s emotional depth. The author’s note is detailed and insightful, providing valuable historical context. This book is well-suited for children aged 6 and up, encouraging both awareness and empathy.
